Bolanle Adeboye: Macrocosmos
Bringing The Inside Out at the The Bridge PAI This May
Opening reception for “Macrocosmos” on First Friday, May 5, 5:30-7:30pm. Live music performance and video projection after sunset. The show runs till the end of the month.
Local Artist Bolanle Adeboye exhibits MACROCOSMOS, an immersive and interactive multimedia installation exploring the relationship between the tiny but mighty inner voice and the vast but connected universe that surrounds it. The exhibition opens May 5 at The Bridge PAI and runs through till the end of the month.
The works, which range in scale from palm sized portraits to expansive murals wrapping the exterior of the building, illustrate little girls who are defiant in their vulnerability. Peering out from shack windows, dancing on garbage cans, floating dreamily in the sky, they invite the spectator to join in their song, to come into the shared playground.
“Viewer participation is a huge part of the show, and visitors are encouraged to leave their mark and become a part of the exhibit. I personally believe that one soft voice singing an unselfconscious lullaby is beautiful on its own terms, even if its out of tune. Enough of such voices together though, and it becomes an undeniable hum, driving the universal chorus. I wanted to make space for that to happen, except, well, visually.”
There will be also be an audio component at the opening reception which showcases a collaboration between the artist Bolanle Adeboye and musician Wes Swing. The live performance will feature a soundscape created by looped cello and layered beats backed by a projected animation.
