Join Matt Marshall and The Bridge Progressive Arts initiative for this unique, festive experience! Matt Marshall performs live accompaniment on piano/organ to this 1920 German silent horror film, directed by Robert Wiene and written by Hans Janowitz and Carl Mayer. Considered the quintessential work of German Expressionist cinema, it tells the story of an insane hypnotist who uses a somnambulist to commit murders. The film features a dark and striking visual style, with sharp-pointed forms, oblique and curving lines, structures and landscapes that lean and twist in unusual angles, and shadows and streaks of light painted directly onto the sets.
The score will be in the style of the Modern composers who were active at the time of the film’s release 1920, Schoenberg, and Stravinsky.

Matthew Marshall: Film Lecturer, screenwriter and film composer. He teaches courses on film criticism and history at the University of Virginia and Hollins University. Marshall has been composing and performing live music accompaniment to classic silent films for over 15 years for the Virginia Film Festival and other venues. He has recorded soundtracks for the British Edition of Charlie Chaplin’s The Kid as well as George Melies’ Conquest of the Pole.
