The UVA McIntire Department of Music and The Bridge Progressive Arts Initiative present the quartet of Christie/ Davis/ Dammann/ Niekrasz, Personal Bandana, and iwontfreakoutthistime for a free night of experimental new music.
Alex Christie (alto saxophone), Chris Dammann, Kevin Davis (cello, Big Muff) and John Niekrasz (drums) create ecstatic improvised sound built upon deep listening and energetic exchange. The music of Christie / Davis / Dammann / Niekrasz follows virtuosic flow, extended techniques, and peripheral awareness toward a real connection with each other and the listener.
Pastoral synthesizer based landscapes by Dave Gibson and Travis Thatcher
Somewhere between the sound of a drunk toddler fiddling with effects pedals, a tribal shaman screaming incantations, and a choir of rejected angels singing to no one in an island cave lies the expansive psychedelic murmur of iwontfreakoutthistime. Based in Oslo, Norway, the solo project of Truman Chance conjures up a sonic atmosphere to get lost in, a place to go inward. Let your mind wander into an open ended question with no answer, and somehow walk away wiser.
This monthly music series occurs in partnership with The Bridge, and features UVA faculty, students, locals, and renown experimental performers. They push boundaries of musicianship by offering a unique laboratory to engage new methods of composition and instrumentation. Unlike anything else in the city, Charlottesville artists and audiences connect with new concepts and are continuously inspired towards ingenuity through unique sound experiences.
