Bridge PAI takes over ownership of Free Speech Wall

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. (CBS19 NEWS) — The Free Speech Wall on the Downtown Mall has a new owner and a new name.

According to a release, the Bridge Progressive Arts Initiative is now the owner and caretaker of the wall, following approval from the Charlottesville City Council.

It will be rededicated as the Community Chalkboard next week.

The release says Bridge PAI has partnered with a coalition of more than two dozen artists and organizations to help make the Community Chalkboard into a vibrant public space.

There will be events all week, including a chalk mural by Chicho Lorenzo, a performance by Kris Monson from the Front Porch, the Big Blue Door’s Words on the Wall, a Museum Mosaic from the Virginia Discovery Museum and much more.

Some of these events will be broadcast live over 91.1 WTJU.

The wall has stood in front of City Hall since 2006.
