Public Artist 2016 Jennifer Hoyt Tidwell’s NO WAKE

March 17, 2016 @ 8:00 pm - 9:30 pm

NO WAKE is a multimedia performance developed by Jennifer Hoyt Tidwell as a part of her 2015/2016 Public Artist Residency at The Bridge. Click here to buy tickets.

NO WAKE runs 8pm to 9:30pm on March 17, 18, 19, 24, 25, 26, & 31, and April 1, 2, 14, 15, & 16. Reserved tickets are available online, and free tickets are available at the door on a first come basis.

The Water Bearers Dance Brigade installation performs in and around the IX Art Park and the Downtown Mall from 7pm to 8pm. The NO WAKE performance starts at 8pm.

Some notes about the NO WAKE performance:

1) The performance space is completely open air, (i.e. not under a tent), for maximum visibility and accessibility to the whole community.

2) We are offering a substantial number of first-come, first-served FREE tickets for every performance, also in an effort to maximize accessibility.

3) NO WAKE will NOT perform in rain, snow, or temperatures below 45 degrees. Feel free to bring blankets and hats if the weather is cool. Hot drinks will be available from our concessions cart. Being outside in the unpredictable weather of March & April is intentional, and enhances the themes of the performance.

4) We believe NO WAKE to be appropriate for kids 10+. It deals frankly with issues and situations of importance to older children and adults.

5) If you have the means, please consider purchasing tickets to the performance. Your purchase supports the making of original, innovative art in Charlottesville.

About NO WAKE:

Referencing Homer’s Odyssey, NO WAKE is a mythic story of a widow whose grief is so enormous that she tries to abandon her child, and ends up causing a storm that tears their house from shore. As mother and child are cast adrift, they are faced with a series of challenges in order to survive. The play engages themes of responsibility, the paralysis of grief, the extent of denial, the challenge of empathy, creation & destruction, and our relationships with the other.

In addition, NO WAKE includes a dance installation piece that showcases a brigade of young dancers known as the Water Bearers, comprising over 30 middle-school aged girls, and created in collaboration with residents of Friendship Court. The Water Bearers will perform from roughly 7 to 8pm as part of each NO WAKE performance.

The Public Artist program is The Bridge’s annual artist-in-residence program. The program provides financial, logistical, and organizational support for an artist to make a piece that directly impacts the Charlottesville community through its production and presentation.

Jennifer Hoyt Tidwell, the 2016 Public Artist, is a Charlottesville performance artist best known for her collaborative work with theatre company Performers Exchange Project (PEP), which co-produced the 2006 A Charlottesville Wunderkammer and 2007’s SHENTAI at the IX Building.
