CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. (CBS19 NEWS) — An artist and poet is using her paintbrush to bring attention to unity and Monacan Nation territory.

Meesha Goldberg is painting a community mural, called Kinfolk, on the north retaining wall next to McGuffey Art Center. Her artwork is part of the North Wall Mural Project, which will display the voices of Black, indigenous, and artists of color in the community.

Goldberg’s mural explores humanity within the greater family of nature. She also reminds the community that the land where the mural resides is on Monacan Land territory.

Goldberg hopes people will also see the struggles the Monacans are facing as they fight to preserve Rassawek from construction of a proposed water pump station.

“I just wanted to pay homage to them and their struggle and remind us that we have a responsibility to the indigenous nations here in this continent,” Goldberg said.

Goldberg hopes to finish her mural this week.
