NBC 29: Charlottesville Mural Honors Indigenous Lands Occupied by City.

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. (WVIR) – People in Albemarle County are celebrating a new mural highlighting diversity.

On Tuesday night, organizers from the Tom Tom Festival, The Bridge Progressive Art Initiative, Charlottesville Mural Project, and Sun Tribe Solar revealed the newest addition to the area’s mural collection. The artist says the pierce pays tribute to the native Americans of present day in Virginia.

“It was designed around the idea of honoring and remembering that we’re occupying indigenous lands now and in a way creating solidarity between the lands here and the indigenous peoples,” said artist Frederico Cuatlacuatl.

Cuatlacuatl says the mural is more than a year in the making and had a helping hand from students in the Albemarle High School Latinx Club.
