Red Shed Mural Project

McGuffey Art Center, The Bridge Progressive Arts Initiative, and the Charlottesville Mural Project are excited to announce a call for muralist submissions for a rotating mural space outside of McGuffey Art Center. The outdoor mural creates an opportunity for local artists to showcase their work in a public way and will ideally provide a space for collective thought, encourage calls to action, engage dialogue, or attract small public gatherings inspired by the work or artist(s).

The physical mural space is located on the red shed behind McGuffey Art Center and the designated space for the mural measures 18’ x 6’. Selected muralists’ work will remain on the wall for one year. The free application, along with details about eligibility and more about the project itself, can be found on McGuffey Art Center’s website (link) or at the following application link. The deadline to apply for this mural project is June 30, 2021.

All painting materials costs will be covered and the artist/artist group will receive $600 stipend for their time & creative labor.

For the current iteration of this project, all artists residing in the City of Charlottesville and neighboring counties in the Central Virginia area are eligible to apply. McGuffey Art Center, The Bridge Progressive Arts Initiative, and the Charlottesville Mural Project embrace diversity of background and artistic vision, and encourage artists without prior mural experience to apply. Artists are welcome to collaborate on mural designs.

After the open application period, muralists will be selected by the programming committee at The Bridge Progressive Arts Initiative as well as by members of McGuffey’s Racial Equity and Inclusion Committee.

All selected muralists will be provided an artist stipend for creative and physical labor and the cost of all painting materials will be covered. McGuffey Art Center, The Bridge Progressive Arts Initiative, and the Charlottesville Mural Project will document the progression of the mural on social media and their respective websites. Additionally, photos of the completed mural will be taken, free of charge, for the artist(s) to use in their portfolios.

To celebrate the completion of the mural and the artist’s vision, McGuffey Art Center will host a “mural reveal ceremony” in conjunction with First Friday (with proper social distancing) in late Summer. The specifics of this “reveal” event will be provided on a later date.

Interested artists with any questions about this project should be directed to Sri Kodakalla & Brielle DuFlon, Renting Artists at McGuffey Art Center (mcguffeyrei@gmail.com).
