Redefining the Family Photo – Exhibition Opening
Exhibition June 1 @ 5:00 pm – 8:00 pm and runs through June.
Redefining the Family Photo
This photography show, held at the Bridge Progressive Arts Initiative during the entirety of Pride Month features seven local photographers, these snapshots cover significant events in the LGBTQ community over the past few years, from private ceremonies to public demonstrations, the first legal same-sex marriages, the vigil after the Pulse nightclub shootings, and more.
“We’ve been so lucky to have these amazing photographers capturing critical events,” says Amy-Sarah Marshall, president of Cville Pride. “But we really wanted everyone to get a chance to experience them. And it really is, for us, photos that show various iterations of what family means to LGBTQ people.”
The group show presents the myriad permutations of “family” experienced by the LGBTQ community in Charlottesville. Often excluded from enjoying traditional and biological connections, LGBTQ individuals have had to redefine who constitutes a family, creating a sense of belonging and community in places and ways that challenge norms and assumptions about what a family can mean. In the context of the last several years of social and legal change, these photos show us how the definition of family has emerged and morphed here in our local experiences of celebration, grief, and protest.
The exhibit kicks off with a First Friday event on Friday, June 1st from 5-8pm. Free and open to the public.
