The Underground

The Underground: A Center for Creative Collaboration, is a 4,300 square foot creative center located at 306 Main Street on Charlottesville's Historic Downtown Mall, and it is a major expansion of the initiatives and resources The Bridge has offered our community for nearly twenty years.  The Underground is a dynamic space for artists and thinkers to share knowledge and engage in cutting-edge creative projects. Our facilities offer a co-working space where artists can work in a community with other creatives as they engage in anything from painting, sculpture, digital art-making, and everything in between. It is a space where creatives can collaborate and are encouraged to share knowledge and approaches

In addition to the co-working space, there are two private studios that creatives can use on a monthly short-term basis for projects in need of individual workspace. Five semi-private spaces can be used in weekly slots, a computer lab with Adobe and Microsoft subscriptions, and an equipment lab with everything from standard to specialty equipment for various creative practices, are all available through a free membership. The Underground offers short-term storage so individuals can work on a project and store supplies without needing constant transportation.

The Bridge is currently fundraising to build the capacity to sustain these offerings to be free of charge. We imagine this space as a “free library” for creatives. At the core of our mission is creating resources that contribute towards a vibrant, accessible arts community that improves cultural, social, environmental, and economic possibilities for our creative world. By removing financial barriers creatives are allowed the freedom to take risks, work together as a community, and contribute to conversations within our broader community.
